Fat OR fictio...

Fat OR fiction – overweight babies?

by Lianne Castelino  www.whereparentstalk.com

Who doesn't love to squeeze and snuggle a chubby baby.  I am most guilty as charged.

However, the findings of a new study appearing in the current issue of the American Journal of Health Promotion indicate those loveable rolls of baby fat might well be a pre-cursor to childhood or even adult obesity.

While the findings will be analyzed and likely disputed, the central message here is key.  The road to healthy eating starts from a baby's first bite.  Sure it is possible with a lot of diligence, tenacity and patience to change the eating habits of an 8-year-old or 14-year-old, but doesn't it make more sense to to start right with a clean slate or in this case, a clean plate?

Laying down a solid foundation for healthy eating begins as soon as a baby is ready to begin eating solid foods – usually around 5-6 months of age.   As parents and caregivers we are the ones with the power to build that strong, base of healthy eating in our children and families.

Babies are born with no habits. Whatever habits they form, are the ones we  create for them.   Healthy eating is a habit worth creating no matter how young they are.
