1. What has been the greatest challenge about being a Dad?
For me, being apart as a family for 3-4 weeks each year during training camp and traveling with the team is the greatest challenge. Long distance parenting/disciplining is tough (they know a hollow threat when they hear one over the phone).
2. What have you learned that has surprised you about being a Dad and a
father of 4?
I am surprised (and disappointed) that I often find myself being a referee instead of relaxing and enjoying spending time with my kids. I sometimes come home from some place or an activity and wonder if my kids thought that I had a good time with them. That is my current goal, to simply relax a bit and enjoy each of them more.
3. What was your greatest Dad moment?
Every time I come home from a road trip or they come to pick m
e up from the airport. The look on their faces as they scream "Daaad! and run up and give me a big bear hug makes me feel like a million bucks. I hope that somehow, I can give them that same "you're the greatest thing in the world" feeling.
4. What one piece of advice would you offer to other Dads about
parenthood?
The most important part of being a good father is to love your wife. Your kids need to see and know that their dad loves their mom. Also, don't be afraid to say "no" I have seen the effects of parents who give-in to their kids and give them everything that they want and it scares me.
5. How has being a professional athlete impacted your parenting skills?
I have tried parenting "football style" and found that "suck it up" and "walk it off" didn't really resonate with my 9 year old twin girls. Push-ups on the other hand for saying "shut up" are a fairly good deterrent!!
